1. Tell us about your life journey in brief, Michael?

Two of my biggest passions from a young age have been writing and reading. I have always enjoyed discovering new stories and writing my own for as long as I can remember. That interest in storytelling first led me to take up English in college, and after that, Journalism. However, it wasn’t until after I had finished my degree that I began to explore the marketing world.

Marketing is in itself a form of storytelling and I found I was able to adapt to many different areas of marketing very quickly. These areas include Blog Marketing, SEO, Email Marketing and YouTube Marketing. I’ve written blog posts on a variety of YouTube-related topics, including YouTube Video Ideas, How to Promote Your YouTube Channel and How to Become a YouTuber.

2. Please tell us how marketers can make Youtube work for them?

YouTube is a platform that offers so many opportunities for marketers. To make it work for you, the first thing you’ll need to do is put in the research. Learn as much as you can about your target audience, focus on what they are interested in seeing and then tie that in with your product/service.

The content that you produce needs to be both relevant and engaging. If you operate in a niche area of business, it will be easier to gauge what people want to see.

YouTube analytics is fantastic for studying your audience’s behavior and seeing what they react best to. Use data such as watch time and demographics to get a better idea of what works and what doesn’t. Hone your strategy over time to create the optimum content for your audience. Take a close look at what your competition is doing and use what you learn to improve your own campaigns.

Promote your channel at every opportunity, using other social media platforms and your site’s blog to increase your reach.

3. What is your favorite Youtube marketing campaign and why?

I love Dollar Shave Club’s video ad on YouTube. It’s unique, funny and gets straight to the point. It doesn’t follow the format of a regular ad and that’s why it stands out.

It features the company’s CEO in the starring role, instantly humanising the brand and setting it apart from larger brands with a more corporate image. The campaign was so successful that it generated 12,000 orders in just 2 days.

You can read more about it in my blog post, 50 Greatest Examples Of Successful YouTube Video Marketing.

4. What are the growth hacks for Youtube video marketing for small businesses/ startups?

SEO is huge when it comes to YouTube marketing. If you want people to find your videos, you need to pay attention to SEO.

That means choosing a relevant keyword that people are searching for and using it in your video’s title. Ideally, the chosen keyword should be at the start of your title. An optimized video description should also see the keyword used 2-3 times and have about 250-400 words in it.

To see what keyword might work for your content, type it into YouTube’s search bar. The suggestions that you get back will show you what people are interested in.

A good video thumbnail is also essential to attract viewers. First impressions are vital and if you have a dull, uninspiring video thumbnail, this will put viewers off. Instead, go for something bright and engaging.

5.  What are the simple things about Youtube marketing which most businesses don’t get or fail to understand?

The first reason people go onto YouTube is to watch videos that entertain and enlighten them. If your video doesn’t tick either of those boxes, it’s not going to do well.

Businesses need to realise that viewers don’t want to be sold to. They want to be shown value before they commit to your product or service. If you can communicate this value on YouTube without coming across as promotional, it’ll be much more likely that you’ll acquire new customers.
