Q. Tell us about your life journey, Karl Yeh?
So I grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia actually moved here from the United States when I was 4, went to Catholic school both for elementary and high school.
And took Criminology at University with the goal of becoming a federal prosecutor but switched to Communications because I really liked the work.
I moved to Calgary, Alberta in 2008 after getting my MBA in Urban Economics with a focus on urban development.
However, when social media and digital really started taking off in 2010 and I moved to that field. I moved to working on a technology start-up and then for Brookfield today which led me to really focusing on video.
Q. What made you take up Video Marketing?
I believe it’s a medium where I could really make a human connection with our audience rather than a written blog.
I wanted to showcase our experts in a way that people who watch the video can actually end up working with those experts.
And I also believe there is significant growth in people who watch the video, especially on youtube where it is overtaking traditional cable.
It’s also a medium you can easily syndicate and break apart your content to other mediums such as podcasts and blogs.
Q. How to achieve results through video marketing as per your own learning?
I recommend, like any marketing tactic, to have a strategy behind it and outline the key objectives you want such as engagement, watch, or direction to another call to action (registration, purchase, etc..).
Also, ensure that your video fits with the overall marketing campaign(s) you are running so it fits that “funnel” you developed. Whether using the video as an awareness play, for remarketing or even creating advocacy.
Also, be sure to have a measurement plan and the ability to get feedback on your videos so you can easily improve them.
Q. What according to you is the future of Video Marketing?
The future is definitely bright as it’s easier to create video and the demand is there to watch.
As the technology in smartphones increases (i.e. 5G) it’s easier to access the video. The quality will get better.
However, space will get crowded pretty quick so it’s really going to be a quality again.
Q. How a newbie can start with Video Marketing?
Create a plan for yourself, and take out your phone to start. Who cares about quality at first.
“Your first 100 videos are less about getting followers, subscribers and more about you learning how to be on camera and all the nuances that come with it. And just have fun with it.”
